Letter from the President

23 October 2003
Dear Friends

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

With Yom Kippur and our Yomtov over, we now have to plan for a Shul after the shock of the destruction and realisation that we need a new Spiritual home for our Sifra Torahs, which were miraculously saved, and a place of worship befitting our religious needs.

We have to examine carefully how best to go forward and plan for the future, taking into consideration inflation and our long-term community viability and our financial resources. With inflation our insurance cover is marginal and our first problem is the cost of demolition. Zimbabwe has limited building materials that we could use in a project such as this, and, therefore the bulk of input must be imported.

There are three possible options, all of which will be costly and require foreign currency, which is difficult to come by:

1. Rebuild on the existing site, a downsized Shul, utilising the shell of the existing new section consisting of the add-on, built in 1962.
2. Converting the Sinai Hall into a Shul – many of the congregants believe this could be converted at not much more cost, in my own opinion, still is not the answer.
3. To purchase a large house in the Suburbs and renovate the building as best we can, for our religious needs. This, in all probability, would be the cheapest but certainly not befitting a proud community dating back over a hundred years.

Therefore, to be absolutely blunt, it all depends on the generosity of our co-religionists in the outside world.

I trust I have told the story as it is and my committee and I will do our best under very difficult circumstances. I will try to keep all our worldwide friends updated as and when we have a clearer picture of how best we can overcome this tragic loss of our beautiful, dignified Shul.

In the meantime it has been wonderful to receive your good wishes and offers of assistance. God willing, we will succeed.

Yours sincerely

ALAN FEIGENBAUM
President, Bulawayo Hebrew Congregation
